A rekenrek helps children recognize numbers as groups instead of counting every bead one by one. Children first learn to see how numbers work together β before memorizing math facts. This understanding becomes a strong foundation for counting, addition, subtraction, and later mental math.
The Christian Kiddo rekenrek resources are designed for children aged 3β7 (Pre-K 3β5 and Early Elementary 6β7).

How does a rekenrek work?
A traditional rekenrek has two rows of ten beads, with five red and five white beads on each row. The colors help children recognize groups of five, making it easier to see patterns instead of counting every bead one by one.
Children usually begin by exploring five, then ten, and later twenty. As their understanding grows, the same ideas can be applied to larger numbers.
The beads are moved from right to left, bringing the number into view on the left. This makes it easier to recognize groups and notice patterns.
Rather than asking children to memorize answers, the rekenrek encourages children to discover how numbers relate to one another.

How can my child use the free interactive rekenreks?
The free interactive rekenreks are made for exploring and playing with numbers. Children can move the beads, build different numbers, count, and see what changes when they move beads back and forth.
Parents can join in by asking simple questions such as βWhat do you see?β, βHow many did you move?β, or βHow did you know?β
There is no set lesson to follow. Children can simply explore the rekenrek at their own pace and discover how numbers work together.
Why does the rekenrek use groups of five?
Groups of five are easier for children to recognize than a long row of individual beads. Instead of counting every bead one by one, children gradually begin to see five as a familiar group.
Groups of five also connect naturally to the five fingers on one hand, giving children another familiar way to think about numbers.
Once they recognize five, they can build on it. For example, instead of counting seven beads, they begin to see βfive and two.β This helps children recognize patterns, build number sense, and see how numbers work together.
Why are the beads moved from right to left?
On a rekenrek, the beads are moved from right to left, bringing the number into view on the left. This makes it easier to recognize groups and notice patterns.
What is the difference between a rekenrek and an abacus?
Although they may look similar, a rekenrek and an abacus are designed with different learning goals in mind.
