The Story Behind the Songs:
Faith, Blankets, and a Grand(ma) Piano
This photo shows exactly how I recorded the eight original Christian Kiddo songs — just with my MacBook. Honestly, I was quite surprised by the quality of its mic!
With the help of some chairs, I built a little “fort” out of good old-fashioned Dutch-quality woolen blankets, and filled the gap with long outdoor chair cushions.
Seventeen years ago, my sweet grandma gave me her final piano — a Yamaha with a USB 1.0 port and even a floppy-disk holder for “extra sounds and effects.” She had been waiting for this moment since I was born. When she first saw my baby hands, she said, “She has piano hands!”
I always wanted to play the piano, but I never told my parents. During college, I took an online course to learn the basics of chords and scales, and for several years I took singing lessons.
I took it very seriously that I was a worship leader at my local church.
I felt so blessed when Grandma entrusted me with her last piano. I longed to play, but soon I walked through a deep, deep valley. For many years, the piano stood wrapped in deafening silence — a quiet witness in our living room. Sometimes I would look at it and wonder when I would be healed and able to sing or play again. Because my brain lacked glucose, I wasn’t even able to listen to music or read my Bible.
I will never forget the moment in March 2023 when, in a still small voice, God spoke:
“I want you to play the piano — and I will bless you.”
The Holy Spirit began to teach me how to play using broken chords, dividing the notes between both hands. My aunt — who used to be a piano teacher — watched me play one day and said, “That’s exactly how Grandma divided chords.”
While recording the Christian Kiddo songs, I felt more alive than ever! I even decided to film two of them, so you can watch me from the side and feel the bursting energy that came out of me. (Those videos will come out soon)
I did the final editing in the free program Audacity — nothing fancy, just simple and true.
Exactly like when God asked Moses, “What’s in your hand?”
It would be wonderful to record in a real studio someday, but I love how it all began — with faith, blankets, Jesus’ Phewie-Power, and the Holy Spirit as my Producer.

1. Twinkle Twinkle ABC
The simplicity of this song is key, and with a little touch of drama here and there, it easily sticks in your head. Especially the playful “Why??” and the joyful “Zee-hee-hee!” — plus a bright high ending for the “sing with me!”

2. Phewie-Power Song (Ask Jesus for a Phewie)
When I write a song, it often starts as just a sweet idea. But when I sit at the piano to find the chords, it suddenly comes alive. As soon as I began to sing along, I felt that blues groove rise up — and the urge to stretch out the “Phewie-heeey!” part.
At first, I sang it only once, but it felt too small.
So I added more — twice in the first verse, and four times in the second — to let all that deep joy and Phewie-Power burst out! 💛

3. I Have a Light Inside of Me
Okay, fun fact — this song was born around 2 a.m.! I had three days of being “home alone,” and while recording, I felt the need to write two extra songs.
Because of the tight little schedule, I prayed for Phewie-Power and help to find a swinging melody and the right words to match the joy of shining your light while jumping on a trampoline.
After a short night, I sat down behind my piano to find matching chords in my favorite key of F. And as I started to sing, it took me by surprise — suddenly I heard myself going, “Phe-phe-phe-phewie!!!” Originally, I had written down “That makes me go Phewie!”
I can’t wait to hear children — and perhaps parents too — go: “Phe-phe-phe-phewie!!!”

4. Hallelujah to You
When I write songs, I keep the words as simple as possible; less is more. When I asked Jesus to help turn “Happy Birthday to You” into a gospel song, I was surprised. With just these three words — “Hallelujah to You” — it became a powerful song.
While writing the stories for the ABCs Bundle, the Holy Spirit pointed me to how He fills us up when we praise God, till it drips, drops, drips…
That’s why Christi spontaneously starts to sing:

5. The Great I Am
The word and the letter “I” are both super short, so for the ABCs Bundle, I decided to turn the word “I” into “I-hi-hi-hi!” — like how in some songs we just love to yell! I couldn’t help but think of the Great I AM — God, who is the highest, the greatest, and the biggest.
The Holy Spirit led me to use the tune of the stunning Dutch Christmas song: Ere zij God!
Here’s the original songtekst translated into English:
Glory to God, glory to God,
In the highest, in the highest, in the highest.
Peace on earth, peace on earth,
to the people whom God delights in.
It’s from Luke 2:14 — and because the original song talks about peace, I realized there’s also a beautiful connection with Jesus' Phewie-Power (Peace). With new words, I rewrote this song. It’s a simple melody in the key of C, yet it carries Heaven’s depth.

6. Dear Father God
This song, too, was born in the middle of the night. I felt the need to let Christi add “drippy, drip, drops” to the worship song "The Great I Am," giving it her own childlike twist to sing:

She also thanks Jesus for all His Phewies — the ones the Holy Spirit is dripping and dropping down to her. This song, and "The Great I Am," are songs that bring Holy Ground into your home.

7. Nearer My God to Thee / Here I Am on My Knee
I love to play and sing the simple line: “Nearer My God to Thee, nearer to Thee.” I’m so grateful for the powerful addition: “Here I am on my knee, Oh-hon my knee.” It feels like taking the timeless hymn-torch to a new generation.
By the way, Uzzi (age 3) noticed that “Thee” sounds just like the letter “D-dee!” So in his sweet Uzzi way, he starts to sing and think out loud:

8. Rock-a-bye Kiddo
Kiddos who grow up don’t like to be called babies, but they still love sweet lullabies that help them calm down. I decided to record this one with just my voice — like how a parent softly sings in their child’s bedroom, without a piano.
After some long recording days, it felt so natural to “yawn a haa-haahhh like Sarah-Sheep…” 🥱
So when you feel (super) tired while tucking your kiddo into bed, you can already look forward to this lullaby — a moment to unashamedly yawn a big haa-haahhh like Sarah-Sheep. 🥱
Your kiddo will love it! And perhaps ask you to sing it again — so you can yawn even more… yippee! 💛
